Guide for January 2026 · All Seasons Painting
Start with the room, not just the color
A finish changes the way paint reflects light and how the surface looks in daily use. A quiet bedroom, a busy hallway and a kitchen do not all have the same cleaning needs. Look at who uses the space, where hands touch the walls and whether furniture regularly brushes the surface.
Compare samples in the actual space
Flat and matte finishes tend to reflect less light, while satin and semi-gloss have more sheen. Higher sheen can make uneven areas more noticeable; product formulations also differ, so the name alone does not tell you everything about cleanability. View samples beside the trim and flooring in daylight and after the lights come on.
Plan walls and trim together
Doors, baseboards and frequently touched trim often benefit from a finish selected for regular cleaning. Ask for the product and sheen to be listed separately for each surface. Benjamin Moore’s guide to paint finishes explains how sheen and traffic affect the choice.
