5 Things to Look for When Hiring a Painting Company in Houston

Houston has a lot of painting companies. A lot. Some are good. Some will take your deposit and disappear. And some will show up, spray everything in two hours, and you'll be left with a finish that peels by summer. I've been painting in the Houston area since 2015 and I've heard enough horror stories from clients that I want to lay out exactly what to look for before you hand anyone a check.

1. License and Insurance β€” Non-Negotiable in Texas

Texas does not require a painting contractor's license the way some states do, but that does not mean documentation doesn't matter. Ask for a certificate of general liability insurance before anyone touches your home. If a painter falls off a ladder on your property and they don't carry insurance, you could be on the hook. I've seen it happen.

Ask for the certificate directly. A legitimate company will email it to you without hesitation. If they hedge, move on. This is the single fastest way to filter out the bad ones.

2. Get Three Quotes β€” But Don't Just Pick the Lowest

Three quotes is the right number. One isn't enough context. Five is overkill and wastes your time. When you compare quotes, look at what's actually included. Is prep work listed? Are they priming? How many coats? What brand of paint?

The lowest bid is almost always the one cutting corners on prep or using cheap paint. I've repainted over a lot of jobs that looked fine at first and started failing at the 12-month mark. That homeowner paid twice. A realistic price for interior painting in the Houston area in 2022 for a standard room is not going to be $150. If that's what someone is quoting, they're skipping steps.

3. Ask Specifically What Prep They Do Before Painting

Prep is the part of painting that nobody sees but everyone feels in the long run. A good painting company will fill nail holes, sand rough spots, caulk gaps around trim, clean the walls, and put down drop cloths before a single drop of paint goes on. Ask them to walk you through their process. If they can't answer clearly, or if their answer is just "we tape and paint," that tells you everything.

On older homes β€” and there are a lot of 1980s and 1990s builds around League City and Friendswood β€” walls often have old repairs, multiple layers of paint, and texture that needs to be addressed before you paint over it again. Skipping prep on those walls means your new paint job will look uneven within months.

4. Make Sure They're Using Quality Paint β€” Not Builder-Grade

There's a real difference between Sherwin-Williams Duration or Emerald and the flat contractor paint that gets used on new construction. Builder-grade paint is meant to look good at move-in and nothing more. It scuffs, it stains, and it doesn't hold up to cleaning.

Ask what brand and product line they use. We use Sherwin-Williams Duration for most of our interior and exterior work. It's not the cheapest option, but it holds up to the Houston humidity, the heat, and the cleaning cycles that come with kids and pets. If a contractor tells you they'll use "high quality paint" without naming a specific product, push for the specifics.

5. Read Google Reviews β€” Not Their Website Testimonials

Every painting company website has glowing testimonials. That's not a useful signal. Go to Google and read the actual reviews. Look at what people say about cleanup, about the crew's communication, about whether the job matched the quote. And pay attention to the negative reviews β€” not because one bad review disqualifies a company, but because how a company responds to a bad review tells you a lot about how they handle problems.

Also look at how many reviews they have and how recent they are. Ten reviews from three years ago is different from sixty reviews spread over the last two years. A company that's actively working in your area will have a steady stream of recent feedback.

Bottom line: good painting companies are out there in Houston. You just have to ask the right questions before you sign anything. Ask about insurance, ask about prep, ask about the paint, and look at real reviews. Do that and you'll avoid most of the bad ones.
