Look beyond the paint color

Dents, nail holes, peeling tape and cracks can remain visible under a new coat. Walk the room in natural light and mark areas that need attention. A small isolated hole and a recurring crack may need different repairs, so show the contractor the full area rather than describing it only by size.

Address moisture first

A stain or soft drywall may point to an ongoing leak or another moisture problem. Find and correct the source before closing the wall or painting. The EPA advises against painting over moldy surfaces and recommends fixing moisture problems and drying materials first.

Discuss texture and finish

After a repair, the goal is to blend the patch with the surrounding wall and prepare it for paint. Texture, lighting and the existing coating affect how visible a patch may be. Ask whether the estimate includes texture matching, priming and repainting the full wall or only the repaired area.
