Inspect the wood

Start by looking for loose boards, damaged posts, peeling old coatings and areas that remain damp. Stain does not repair structural damage. Ask which repairs are included in the painting estimate and which should be handled before the staining work begins.

Allow time for cleaning and drying

Dirt, loose material and moisture can interfere with the finish. The cleaning method depends on the wood and its condition; it should not damage the surface. Drying time depends on the weather and the wood, so a fixed schedule is less useful than checking the actual conditions and the coating instructions.

Decide on coverage and color

Confirm whether both sides, gates, posts and horizontal rails are included. Test a sample on the actual fence: wood species, weathering and previous coatings can change the appearance. Review the manufacturer’s application directions for temperature, moisture and rain before setting a work date.
