Exterior Paint Colors That Hold Up in Texas Heat

Houston gets brutal sun. More than 300 days of it a year. A paint color that looks perfect in the showroom can fade and chalk out in 2 years if the product isn't built for this climate. I've seen it happen many times — homeowners spend good money on a paint job and it starts looking washed out before the warranty is even up. Here's what actually holds up in the League City and Houston area, and what you want to stay away from.

The Heat and UV Problem

The main enemy of exterior paint in Houston is UV radiation. It breaks down the pigment in paint over time — that's what causes fading. The surface goes from rich and saturated to washed out and dull. You've seen houses around the neighborhood where the paint just looks tired even though it's only a few years old. That's UV damage.

Heat makes everything worse. Dark colors absorb more heat than light ones. A deep navy or charcoal siding on the south side of your house in League City can reach surface temperatures well above 150°F during summer afternoons. At those temperatures, paint gets soft, expands, and becomes more vulnerable to cracking and peeling when it cools down at night.

Chalking is another problem specific to lower-quality exterior paints. That's when the paint breaks down at the surface and leaves a powdery residue. Run your hand along a house that's been in the sun for 10 or more years and you'll feel a chalky film on your hand. Chalking paint has to be washed off and the surface re-prepped before you can repaint — you can't put new paint over chalk.

South-facing and west-facing walls take the worst beating in Texas. If your house has a wall that gets direct afternoon sun in summer, plan for that wall to age faster than the north or east sides.

Paint Products That Handle Texas Weather

Not all exterior paints are equal in this climate. Here's what I use and recommend after doing exterior jobs in League City, Friendswood, and the Clear Lake area since 2015:

Sherwin Williams Emerald Exterior — This is the top of the line. 100% acrylic, the best UV resistance Sherwin Williams makes. It has a built-in primer in the formula, excellent coverage, and holds color better than anything else in the Sherwin line. If you want the longest life on your exterior, this is what I'd put on it.

Sherwin Williams Duration — One step below Emerald in price, but still an excellent product for Houston. I've painted dozens of houses in League City and Pearland with Duration and it holds up well in this climate. For most homeowners who want a great result without going top-shelf, Duration is the right call.

Benjamin Moore Aura Exterior — Comparable to Emerald in quality and price. Excellent fade resistance, great self-priming capability, and I've seen it hold color beautifully on houses in the South Shore Harbour area. Some customers ask specifically for Aura and I'm happy to use it.

What to avoid: flat exterior paint on siding. Flat finish absorbs more UV than satin or semi-gloss and holds mildew. Budget paint from big-box stores is also a problem in this climate — the pigment load and acrylic content are usually lower than professional-grade products, and they don't hold up to the heat-UV combination here in Houston.

Colors That Hold Up Best

Light colors fade less visibly. Whites and light grays will still look close to original after 8 to 10 years if the paint is premium and the surface was properly prepped. Even as they change slightly over time, they don't look bad — they look like a well-maintained classic exterior.

Earth tones and beiges are forgiving. Accessible Beige, greige tones, warm tans — these age well in this climate. Even as they fade a little, the result still looks intentional rather than worn out. This is one reason these colors have stayed popular in neighborhoods like Tuscan Lakes and Victory Lakes for years.

Dark colors are popular right now — deep navy, charcoal gray, near-black. They look sharp. But they require premium paint and they will fade faster than light colors. With Sherwin Williams Emerald, a dark color might look good for 5 to 8 years. With budget paint on a south-facing wall, you could be repainting in 3 years.

What to Avoid in Houston's Climate

Latex flat paint on exteriors. It chalks, it holds mildew, and it doesn't clean well. I always recommend satin finish at minimum on siding. Eggshell or semi-gloss works well on trim. Flat finish has no business on a Houston exterior.

Colors with heavy red pigment. Red fades faster in UV than any other color. Pure reds, bright oranges, and coral tones will look washed out in 2 to 3 years in this climate. If you want red tones, go for terracotta or brick-red earth tones — they're less saturated and fade more gracefully.

Dark colors on stucco. Stucco already traps and radiates heat. A dark color on stucco in League City or Clear Lake gets extremely hot in summer afternoons, and that thermal stress can cause cracking at the surface over time. If you have stucco and want a darker look, I'd recommend a medium tone rather than going deep.

How Often Should You Repaint in Houston?

Here's what I tell homeowners honestly:

We've been called in to repaint jobs that were done just 2 years ago — cheap paint, no pressure washing beforehand, no priming. The paint was already peeling at the caulk lines and fading badly on the south side.

Signs it's time to repaint your exterior:

• You see or feel chalking powder on the surface when you touch it
• Paint is peeling at the caulk lines around windows and doors
• The color looks dull or washed out even right after you wash the house
• You can see bare wood starting to show through anywhere on the siding or trim
• Caulk is cracking or pulling away from the trim
