Check the cabinets first

Cabinet refinishing works best when the boxes and doors are sound and you like the existing layout. Look for loose hinges, swollen panels, peeling coatings and areas that have collected grease. Bring these concerns up before deciding on a finish; painting cannot correct damaged hardware or a failing cabinet box.

Understand preparation

Cabinet surfaces need cleaning and a preparation plan suited to the existing finish. Depending on the material and coating, that can include sanding, a compatible primer and a cabinet-grade finish. Ask how doors and hardware will be labeled and where the work will be done, because those choices affect the time your kitchen is disrupted.

Choose the finish in context

Compare samples against the countertop, backsplash, floor and nearby wall color. View them in daylight and at night, and discuss the level of sheen and care instructions. Confirm which surfaces are included, such as cabinet frames, doors, drawers and any visible end panels.
